I have to give you a bit of background to explain how things are so much different for me today than they were in 2000 when I decided to work for myself. It’s pretty simple really. I have a knack for connecting with people to empower them to succeed beyond their wildest dreams. But, as a self-bosser, I had to learn some new skills. One of them was having the confidence to sell myself every time I networked with other people. I started helping some of my best friends in my area who were starting their own businesses and were struggling getting them off the ground. They started to see their businesses really change with my help. Soon, my friends were referring people to me to get help with their new businesses. The funny thing is, I found out that the biggest problem most of my clients had with starting their new business was, they were sure they were going to fail right from the start! That led me to investigate the connection between dreading selling and marketing their business and fear of failure -- and believe it or not...success -- in new-bossers and women in particular. I came out of my shell a bit in college when I worked behind the Student Union Snack Bar. I stood behind a marble counter high enough to cover most of my body so people could not see how big I was. Instead of being my usual sullen self, I was expected to be pleasant to my customers. So I sort of used that counter as a theatre stage. I figured I could play the part of a confident person. I seemed pretty confident, even perky on the outside. But, I still was pretty uncomfortable inside. As an adult, I wanted to finally do something about my lack of confidence. It became even more of an imperative, as you can imagine, when I started working for myself. I started reading books about self-improvement. I became a student of human psychology. I even completed a Masters in a behavior-oriented field to get more insight into the science of motivating others. From that exposure I learned that a huge part of success in building a customer base came from having INNER confidence and BUILDING RAPPORT with them. So I became an expert at building relationships quickly so people trusted and liked me right away. Those skills have served me well!
